I've never been good at asking for help....
but I'm going to on this one.
I know the heart of quilters....
I am going to put together quilts for Tory, Chris' Mom
his two brothers and one for the
soldier who was his best friend
and who fought right alongside Chris...
and was
there...
when he took his last breath.
I'm going to do the quilts in a muted red, white and blue
theme.
And I thought 'Star' blocks would be so appropriate
in this situation.
I would so appreciate any of you who
would like to help me in this endeavor.
I need 8" blocks
(Finished Size of Block to be 8 1/2" X 8 1/2")
or
(12 1/2" X 12 1/2" Blocks)
or
(12 1/2" X 12 1/2" Blocks)
and when I say muted...
the best way to describe it...
is kind of like the Minnick and Simpson fabrics
that are always designed for Moda.
(They don't have to be Minnick and Simpson though!!)
There is a fantastic tutorial that just posted over
here at
Madam Samm's Blog
on how to make a fabulous Star Block.
(Since this tutorial is for 12 1/2" blocks, we will make one or two of the quilts (or more) with this size of block too!)

We would be so grateful for any!
I would so appreciate it too,
if any of you would like to copy this post on your blog.
I'm hoping Tory will help me sew them all together
to help her in her grieving.
I'm also going to try to get a local group
together to help out as well,
when all of the blocks are received.
If at all possible we need the blocks by end of October.
You may send them to:
The Scrappy Appleyard

Nashville, TN 37214
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
You all will never know how much your comments, prayers
and thoughts have helped us to get through this tragedy.
May God bless you all...
what a heartfelt post...so touching...and what a wonderful idea....i don't know how to sew....but i can say a prayer

Yes, I'll send you a couple... HUGS
ReplyDeleteHi John'aLee! I'm glad to see that you are doing this, and I do think it will be a comfort to Tory, and you! I will gladly make a few blocks for you...does it matter what type of star? And I will post this on my blog tomorrow.
ReplyDeleteYou all are still in my thoughts and prayers!
XOXO,
Cyndi
What fantastic idea John' a Lee. Your post in now on my blog and I've shared it to my Facebook page. I hope you get a huge response. xx
ReplyDeleteHello John a 'Lee. I've published your post on my blog and shared it to my Facebook page. Hope you get a huge response. xx
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely up for doing this! I'll post on my blog too as I'm sure my readers would love to help if they can. It's lovely to be able to do something, so thank you for being brave enough to ask! X
ReplyDeleteCould you possibly post some pictures of fabric colors? or even a link to a block tutorial? I'll see if I have anything there.
ReplyDeleteI'm jumping over here from Happy Cottage Quilter and I would be honored to make some blocks. Please know that my heart and prayers go out to you and Tory and Chris' family. I cannot imagine. Our son is in the Marines and it is so hard, yet we are so proud. I'll dry out the blocks because there is no way they will not have tears on them. I made 14 blocks for Quilts of Valor a while back. What size would you like for me to make?
ReplyDeleteNevermind! I went back ans saw that you asked for 8" blocks! :)
ReplyDeleteOff to make some right now....surely I have fabric that will be a match..glad to do
ReplyDeleteI'll look through my stash to see what I have that fits the look your after.
ReplyDeleteJohn'aLee, how could I not help out another Utah girl, offering the chance acknowledge a Fallen Hero. He gave all he had for me, so it would be an honor to have a chance to give something, however small, in return. *Besides, I just happen to have won a 5 lb box of Minnick and Simpson scraps from one of their new lines and I have them hanging over the rail in my sewing closet, pressed and ready with no place to go!!! I will start on some blocks today. Thank you for a chance to give something back. Hugs, Love and Blessings...
ReplyDeleteI don't have this particular blue, but I'm going to stop by my LQS and see if they have a charm pack of these colors. If so, I'm in for a block.
ReplyDeleteHow did I miss this post......I will have to see if I have this color of fabrics....
ReplyDeleteI will post this on my blog in my next post and I will try to make at least one block myself, too. This is a very good idea to do for all of them.
ReplyDeleteHi. I followed Pat's blo over to you. I am going to check my fabric stash and get some blocks made. My Dad served in Korea and Vietnam. He was injured in Vietnam, but he came back to us. For your family and for all our men and women who serve thank you for your sacrifice.
ReplyDeleteI just finished cutting some stars out and will try to get them sewn and into the mail in the next week or so. It's not much, but I am happy to be able to help. Thank you for asking. Bless you, Tory, and Chris' family and friends.
ReplyDeleteABSOLUTELY, girl. I'll get something together this weekend. Does Tory have any t-shirts or shirts of Chris's? That would make a really lovely memory quilt too.
ReplyDeletehttp://www.sewiquiltnow.com/2011/09/making-every-moment-count.html on it's way...
ReplyDeleteIt would be an honour to send you a block or two...
ReplyDeleteHugs Dawn x x x
I'm not sure I'm forming the right words, but when I read this my heart crushed. I'm a military brat through and through and still can't imagine all you are working though. I will make a few blocks and send them your way with lots of prayers and sentiment for healing!
ReplyDeleteI will get you a block. Hopefully it will get to you on time as I am sending it from Europe, the Netherlands. I feel so much for you guys loosing such a lovely young man at such a young age! I hope making the quilts will comfort Torey a bit!
ReplyDeleteI'm cutting out the block today!! I'm so pleased to have a way to put my sorrow for your loss into something tangible!!
ReplyDeleteBTW, we are almost neighbors in that I live north of Huntsville, Ala almost on the Tn line!!
A star will be on it's way soon and I'll pass the word.
Blessings
Gmama Jane
I'm really sorry for your family's loss. Being the mother of a Purple Heart soldier currently in Iraq. I will make a block for you. I have also posted on my blog for you.
ReplyDeleteI am praying for Tory and you and Chris' family.
ReplyDeleteWhat a kind, generous person you are. Since you are making five quilts, I will try to do five blocks, all finishing 8 1/2 right or do you want a mix of 8 1/2 and 12 1/2 blocks?
ReplyDeleteIt will be my privillege to make a star in honor if this American hero. This is a wonderful thing you are doing.
ReplyDeleteI'm praying for Tory and Chris' family. Would be glad to contribute a couple of blocks. I'll get to them right away!
ReplyDeleteI will gladly get some blocks off to you...what a wonderful thing to do.
ReplyDeleteI found you through Madame Samm...I will be making and sending. Prayers are with you and all of the families.
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm so very very sorry. I would be happy to make some blocks!
ReplyDeleteI'm so very sorry to hear this. I will definitely make some blocks.
ReplyDeleteI may be late to this post, but please count me in! Blessings to you Dear Heart!!
ReplyDeleteI would like to make you some blocks but I don't know those fabrics. Are the colors like Mme Samm's post?
ReplyDeleteDo you want just any 8" or 12" star block, or just the ones that you posted links for? This is such a generous thing for you to do.
ReplyDeleteI came via Impera Magna's post telling about your request for blocks. They are on my list for sewing Monday--I know the type of fabric you mean. Will do my best to accomodate. Wish I had been able to get to the Panguitch quilt walk before you left the area. I'm in Northern Utah.
ReplyDeletePrayers are with you and your daughter and all concerned!
I'll get sewing this week and make you a few blocks.
ReplyDeleteHugs to you and your family. ((hugs))
I cried as I read all the posts about the loss of Chris and the heavy hearts Tory, you and your family are experiencing...your family has suffered so deeply...I can't imagine how much it hurts...cherish the happy memories and the tears will lessen as time heals your broken hearts.
ReplyDeleteI'll definitly make some Star blocks and I'd also like to make a pillow case for each quilt... I have a good amount of Mimick and Simpson fabrics. I'll make 6 pillow cases and if you need more just send me a quick email.....
Thanks for sharing this difficult time with your blogland friends. I admire your strength and courage as your family has suffered the greatest sacrifice anyone can endure. hugs Pauline
A pair of stars are on their way to you. I hope this small bit of love helps in this time of great sadness.
ReplyDeleteSo sad and deepest Sympathy to you. I will make 2 blocks tomorrow and get them in the mail. I hope they get to you in time coming from Australia.
ReplyDeleteHello, just finished 2 blocks and on my way to the post .I heard this sad story from Happy Cottage Quilter who I follow. I am now a follower for you. Just say if ever you need help again.
ReplyDeleteHi! One of my blog-rollers mentioned this condolence project at her place. I'm making a block - should be in tomorrow's mail.
ReplyDeleteI'm so very sorry for your daughter's loss. As an Air Force wife and veteran of several deployments, this hits close in my heart. I'm putting a block in the mail today. (got word through Sew Create It)
ReplyDeleteDo you still need blocks? I have 2- 12 inch blocks to send.
ReplyDeleteI'm so, so sorry for your loss...
ReplyDeleteI just learned about your request today, so am wondering... do you still need more blocks? I'd be happy to make up a few if you do, and I could have them in the mail within a week. Let me know!
